★ Folkmore Roles & Attributes ★

Skills:
  • wealth management
  • chess and other board games
  • poker and other card games (specifically cheating at them)
  • mixology
  • following people unnoticed (stalking)
  • sleight of hand
  • knowledge of legal practices (half-finished law degree)

Canon Abilities:
  • pseudo-vampirism

    • enhanced senses, up to and including echolocation
    • shockwave generation
    • flight
    • fangs and claws
    • the need to drink blood to survive (preferably human)

Role: familiar
Role Qualities/Attributes: Lucien will develop the ability to turn into various animals, limited to the animals listed in the D&D spell Find Familiar: bat, cat, crab, frog/toad, hawk, lizard, octopus, owl, piranha, poisonous snake, rat, raven, sea horse, spider, or weasel. Being a Living Vampire, he will feel most comfortable in the form of a bat, or with batlike qualities.
Role Reasoning: Lucien being the film's primary antagonist made me initially want to choose Myth, but after further consideration, the fact that his entire character history, personality, and motivations to villainy are centered around his friendship with and devotion to Michael, made me think that Familiar would be a better choice.
★ Personality ★

Option 2. Choose FOUR-FIVE of the following questions to answer and expand upon. You may choose a fifth question if you feel it is integral to your character's personality. Each answer has a 100-300 word requirement.

  1. What is the most important and defining relationship(s) in your character's life and why?
There are really only two important relationships in Lucien's life: Dr. Emil Nicholas, and Michael Morbius.

Dr. Nicholas was the attending physician at the private hospital where Lucien and Michael spent their youth, and serves as a stand-in father figure for the pair. While Lucien felt a great deal of love and appreciation for Nicholas, he always harbored some resentment for the way Nicholas favored Michael, and felt no remorse in morally wounding him to send a message to Michael.

Michael is the most important person in Lucien's world; he is his one true friend, his confidante, his partner in crime, his savior, his betrayer. Michael is the person who first gave Lucien the nickname Milo. Originally it was meant as a way for Michael to distance himself from the new boy in the hospital— all the boys who had been there previous he had named Milo, and all previous Milos had died— but after Michael saved Milo's life by fixing his blood pump machine, the two were inseparable. After Dr. Nicholas encouraged Michael to pursue medical school, Michael wrote Milo a letter vowing to him that he would find the cure that would save both their lives. Later, after Michael tells Milo that his experimental serum was not a cure, but a curse, and denies Milo's wish for it to be administered to him, Milo feels betrayed, and takes matters into his own hands, stealing the second dose of the serum and administering it to himself. He tries to convince Michael that as vampires, they are better than the rest of humanity, and that he should feel no guilt over feeding on human blood, but Michael will not be swayed, and eventually kills Milo to stop him from killing anyone else.

  2. What is a headcanon (or two) you feel strongly about and that you prefer playing your character with? How is this supported in canon and why do you think it benefits the character's story?
I headcanon Lucien as bisexual, and demiromantic. Even before the serum, he lives the life of a carefree billionaire, albeit with the caveat that he must walk with a cane and hook himself up to a machine for blood transfusions daily. But when we do see Lucien cut loose, he is clearly an experienced flirt who knows how to have a good time. It's easy to see Lucien as having had many flings but very few (if any) serious relationships. He doesn't let anyone get close to him apart from the people who have seen him at his weakest. His relationship to Michael can be seen as either brotherly or as an unrequited crush, and I think both of those are true, in some way. The way he stalks Martine, Michael's love interest, shows that he is clearly jealous of her for receiving Michael's attention.

Making Lucien bisexual makes roleplaying easier, as it frees me up to have him flirt with characters of any sex, while making him demiromantic allows me to stay true to his closed off, emotionally hardened (and yet still vulnerable) nature.

  3. What is your character's moral code? Do they have one? Why or why not?
Milo has one code, one rallying cry that has kept him sane his whole life, a pact made with Michael: "We are the few against the many." To apply that thinking to his morality, Milo will do whatever he must to ensure the safety and survival of him and his own. This includes anything from funding Michael's illegal experimentation in search of a cure for their illness, to murdering innocent humans who disrespect Michael.

Even before he and Michael became living vampires, Milo saw the two of them as an inseparable team fighting tooth and nail against a cruel world that didn't care about them. When Milo sees Michael post-serum, he doesn't see the vampirism as a curse, but a gift they can use to make themselves into the ultimate survivors, and win the lifelong war they've been fighting. This is why he administers the second dose to himself, against Michael's wishes. While Michael, as a doctor, has taken an oath to do no harm, Milo has no such compunctions. If the key to his survival is feeding on human blood, then that's what he'll do, with no hesitation.

  4. If you could give your character a Taylor Swift playlist, which songs would be on it and what would they represent about your character?

It's Nice To Have A Friend

school bell rings, walk me home
    sidewalk chalk covered in snow
lost my gloves, you give me one
    "wanna hang out?"
    yeah, sounds like fun

Meeting Michael as a boy and forming a lifelong friendship.
    New Romantics

'cause baby, I could build a castle
out of all the bricks they threw at me
and every day is like a battle
but every night with us is like a dream

Michael and Milo's rallying cry of "we are the few against the many."
Look What You Made Me Do

    but I got smarter
I got harder in the nick of time
honey, I rose up from the dead
I do it all the time

Milo framing his decision to turn himself into a living vampire as something Michael initially denied him.
    ...Ready For It?

knew he was a killer first time that I saw him
    wonder how many girls
he had loved and left haunted
but if he's a ghost, then I can be a phantom
    holdin' him for ransom

Milo's history of having sexual flings without developing romantic feelings for anyone.
    I Did Something Bad

they say I did something bad
but why's it feel so good?
    most fun I ever had
and I'd do it over and over and over again if I could

Getting addicted to human blood and having no qualms killing to survive.
no body, no crime (feat. HAIM)

I think he did it but I just can't prove it (he did it)
I think he did it but I just can't prove it
    No, no body, no crime
But I ain't letting up until the day I die

Sneakily killing the nurse at Horizon Labs, a crime which Michael would get blamed for.
    Don't Blame Me

for you, I would cross the line
    I would waste my time
    I would lose my mind
they say, “she's gone too far this time”

Murdering innocent people in order to (in his mind) protect Michael.
You Belong With Me (Taylor's Version)

if you could see that I'm the one
    who understands you
    been here all along
    so, why can't you see?
    you belong with me

Trying to convince Michael that he should give up on feeling bad for humans.
This Is Why We Can't Have Nice Things

so why'd you have to rain on my parade?
I'm shaking my head, I'm locking the gates

Feeling betrayed by Michael, and like their lifelong friendship was under threat.
    Bad Blood (feat. Kendrick Lamar)

remember when you tried to write me off? (uh-huh)
remember when you thought I'd take a loss?
don't you remember? you thought that I would need ya
follow procedure, remember? oh, wait, you got amnesia
it was my season for battle wounds
    battle scars, body bumped, bruised
stabbed in the back; brimstone, fire jumping through
still, all my life, I got money and power
and you gotta live with the bad blood now

Lucien and Michael literally have a blood disease, and have to have their bad blood swapped out daily in order to survive. After Michael and Milo become living vampires, they have a falling out over Michael's insistence on feeding only on synthetic "blue blood," versus Milo's desire to feed on the better "red stuff." So they now have bad blood because Michael wants to drink bad blood.

  5. Is your character capable of forgiveness or will they hold a grudge until they die? Would anything ever make them change their mind?
We don't see Lucien practice much forgiveness throughout the movie, instead we see him murder those who wrong him. When a newspaper vendor badmouths Michael, Lucien kills him. When a rude guy stops Lucien from hitting on a girl in a club, Lucien kills him. When Dr. Nicholas takes Michael's side and tried to convince Lucien that murdering people and drinking their blood is wrong, well... Lucien murders him too. Lucien is less about forgiveness and more about vengeance.

The one exception is, of course, Michael. At the very end of the movie, after Michael injects Milo with the formula that will reverse his vampirism (and, in the process, kill him), the look on Milo's face is one of shock, hurt, but finally understanding. He comes to a very quick realization that Michael would never have come around to his argument of "the few against the many," because Michael is driven to help others, not harm them. Milo realizes in that moment, that any version of Michael that could have been tempted to Milo's violent ways, would not have displayed the qualities that made Michael so special to Milo in the first place. And in realizing this, moments before his death, he forgives Michael, and in turn seeks forgiveness from him.
